Memorizing By Singing
I’ve always been able to remember songs better than plain-English sentences. If I can sing something, I’ll remember it faster, better, longer. And if I do forget it, as soon as I hear the tune, I can usually bring it back quickly.
My children are the same. They hear songs on the radio, in the grocery store, on the school bus, and the next thing I know they’re running around the house singing “Rome-roma-ro-ma-ma-a bad romance.”
Then I discovered Seeds Family Worship. (Disclosure: they sent me CDs to review at no cost to me. The opinions expressed here are my own. I only review items I think may be a good fit for our family and for yours.)
Each CD contains songs around a theme: Seeds of Courage, Seeds of Faith, Seeds of Praise, Seeds of Purpose, and The Power of Encouragement. They are working on a sixth album now: Seeds of Character. When you order a CD, they send you two, one for you and one for a friend.
I found this video of one of my favorite songs by Seeds. I’ve been singing it to myself the last few days as I battle worry about my son’s upcoming medical procedure. (Other videos of their songs available on the Seeds Youtube channel.)
One of the things I love about the Seeds approach is that they do not reword the verses. They take the verses straight out of the NIV and set them to very singable music. I keep a few Seeds CDs in my van so my kids and I can sing along whenever we’re out. It is such a blessing to overhear both my 3-year-old and my five-year-old singing “Cast your cares on the Lord, He will sustain you” (available on volume 5, The Power of Encouragement) or “store up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, where thieves do not break in and steal…”
I’ve written a series on memorizing Scripture, mainly focused on adults. But this is an important practice to introduce to your children too. Seeds CDs can help your children memorize easily, and since they provide memory cards and checklists for the verses on each album, you can keep track of how they are doing easily.
