How To Make a Morning Person
It’s 5:30am, and I’m sitting at my laptop in the corner of our family room. Coffee steams on the side table. My dog snores across the room.
It is quiet.
I have never been a morning person. I also didn’t need quiet the way I do now. Being a parent has driven me to seek out quiet wherever I can find it. Right now, it means setting my coffee pot and my alarm clock for 5am.
I get two, read that, TWO HOURS, of precious blissful quiet when I crawl out of bed at 5am. I crave it so much that I’m willing to give up sleep, which was the thing I valued most during my first ten years of motherhood.
I need the quiet to settle, to think ideas through without being interrupted by a sibling argument or another version of the same request I responded to seconds ago. This time to myself keeps me sane.
